Curator’s note:

While my two palms are tightly holding the book MemOyoU by Santi Lawrachawee, my thumbs gently flip the pages. Page by page, my eyes intently gaze upon the minuscule font of each phrase.

The story begins at a cafe where Santi attempts to portray his feelings on the relationship between two people, as well as the surrounding chairs, table, coffee cups, the lipstick marks in front of him, the cigarette butts in his hand and more. Santi rewrites and rereads his 10-year notes reflecting the beauty of timelessness.
“That’s classic!!!”

The memorandum combines Santi’s scattered phrases from his own books intended to trigger the imagination of readers. It features illustrated profound questions and answers - a result of the artist’s self-reflection on his own daily thoughts which are triggered by anxiety, pain, hope, love and imagination. In the same way in which we are unable to read the people we meet without truly understanding them, the book is intentionally designed to be unreadable, a challenge that takes effort and time.

It’s no surprise that human beings often question the meaning of life, tired of the mundane and repetitive nature of everyday life. Traveling becomes our escape - a means to explore and uncover the truth.

Another set of photographs of the river reflects the journey of the mind represented by a selection of images of water streams in various forms, as the lessons on the meanings of life by Citta and Samsara. As Siddhartha achieves enlightenment from Vasudeva, a ferryman, by listening to the river, the ego, thoughts and illusion are liberated and vanish away. He conceives the nature of this world through nonduality, meaning that the separation of matters is but an illusion. As with the waves of the river, we do not make a distinction between the waves and the river itself. Because both are the river and they only differ in form.

However, life is a journey. We are bound to encounter experiences that shape our lives - experiences that sometimes tease us but also make us feel and makes us remember. Self-reflection then becomes a way to explore the value of life and the value within ourselves because one cannot touch the exact same water twice when one steps into a river.

Santi Lawr
santivithee.design

Born in Bangkok, Thailand in 1971.
Santi, a prominent cross-disciplinary designer, is able to use the language of design as a means to convey the message of his own artworks within both roles, a visual artist and a curator.

He has been invited to shows worldwide, as an exhibitor and occasionally as a lecturer, including Graphic Trial Exhibition 2019 (Tokyo), Fikra Graphic Design Biennial 01 (2018, Sharjah, UAE).

Santi is a co-founder and designer of PRACTICAL, a notable communication design studio based in Bangkok. Parallel with his visual arts and design work, he is also an active educator serving as a lecturer at remarkable institutes and organizations.

On the special occasion of Unknown Asia 2021, Santi presents his latest solo exhibition in Bangkok during the COVID-19 epidemic in a 6-piece video format.

It is with great hope that this will be a unique opportunity to introduce this series of works to everyone at this event.
