「この気持ちの形、置き忘れた言葉」は言葉で直接伝えることの重要性と、それが時に難しくなってしまうことに注目した、分野横断的なプロジェクトです。

The shape of this feeling, the word I am missing is an interdisciplinary project focusing on the importance of saying things directly and how difficult it can sometimes be for some people.


感じていても話し言葉では伝えにくい伝わらないものを集めました。そして自分自身のコミュニケーション方法の研究でもあります。バイリンガリティは大切な役割を演じています。単により多くの人がアクセスできるということにとどまりません。それぞれの言語はニュアンスと限界があるので、英語と日本語のテキストは同じことの翻訳以上のものなのです。これらは互いに補完し合い、人間の複雑な相互作用に新しいレイヤーを加えています。

It is a collection of things felt but not easily conveyed into spoken language and a study of one’s way of communication.
The bilinguality plays a significant role in the project; it goes beyond simply making it accessible to more people. As each language poses particular restrictions and nuances, English and Japanese texts are more than just versions of the same thing. They complement one another, adding yet another layer to the already complex matter of human interactions.

私は言葉があまり得意ではありません。
このプロジェクトで使った言葉の数を考えれば、これはおかしな発言に
聞こえるかもしれません。
でも、書くことと声に出して言うことは、全く別の話です。

I am not very good with words.
It may be a funny statement to make, considering the sheer amount of words used in this project. 
But to write something down is one thing. 
To say it out loud is the whole other story.


書き言葉は忍耐強いです。順番を待っています。
やり残した会話の断片を拾い、長引く沈黙に意味を持たせます。

The written word is patient. It awaits its turn.
It picks up the pieces of unfinished conversations and helps to make sense of prolonged silence.


話し言葉は荒くなりがちです。まず、圧倒的な感情とその場を台無しにしてしまうのではないかという恐怖心と闘わなくてはなりません。その過程で意味の半分を失うように見えます。そして、最終的に口から出るときには、言いたかったことのほんの一部しか伝えられていません。

A word that is spoken is always a little wild.
It first has to battle the emotional overwhelm, the fear of ruining the moment. Seemingly losing half its meaning in the process. And when it finally escapes the mouth, it only manages to convey a little part of what one wanted to say.


書き言葉でも話し言葉でも、私はある種の言葉を避ける傾向があります。私にとって、ある言葉は大きすぎると同時に小さすぎます。
あまりに子供っぽく大人びています。
壮大であり哀れです。特別であり平凡です。

Written or spoken, some words I just keep dancing around.
Some phrases seem both too big and too small for me.
Too childish and too grown-up at the same time.
Grand and pathetic. Extraordinary and mundane.


以前は、行動のほうが言葉より物を言うと思っていました。今でもある程度はそれが真実だと考えています。でもそれは、長い間言葉を否定されてきた人の気持ちであることも事実です。

I used to think that actions speak louder than words. 
I still think it to be true - to a certain extent.
But it is also true that this is a sentiment of someone who for the longest time was denied the words.


ただ言葉にするという行為には、ある種の美しさがあります。
けれど、これは少しも簡単なことではありません。

There is a certain beauty in simply being told.
But there is nothing simple about that.


たぶん、この作品には不在の言葉があります。でもそれは失われたわけではありません。
それは私からのギフトであり、私の選択でもあります。
今のところは、ただ安全なところにしまっておきます。

There may be a word missing from this work, but it is not lost.
It is my gift to give and my choice to make.
For now, I am just keeping it safe.

The Permanent Resident is a bilingual (English/Japanese) book written and illustrated by Hanna Kaszewska.

「永住者」はハンナ・カシェフスカによって書いてイラストした二ヶ国語（英語・日本語）のブックです。

Some people have a way of staying with us, even if they are no longer around (whether by choice or circumstances, or a mixture of both).
This is a book about that.
It is a story about missing and inability to let go, and the fact that on emotional level dreams can hurt as much as reality does sometimes.

時々人は出発しても（選択とか事情とかのせいで）私たちと一緒にいます。
このについてブックです。
恋しいについてストーリーです。夢が現実と同じくらい私たちを傷つけることがあるというストーリーです。

It is a very personal story but in a way, it may also be a story about you. If you ever missed someone or had a hard time letting go, then the story may feel familiar. In a sense, it is a story as old as time and quite universal at that.

大いに個人的な作品ですが、それも皆さんについて事かもしれません。もし誰かを恋しくてさよならを言うのに苦労しましたことがありますなら、このブックがよく知っている内容にようなかもしれません。この点で、昔の話です。
本当にウニベルサルストーリーです。

The details may vary.
The dream takes different forms,
comes in different shapes.

But it is always the same:
we are supposed to meet,
but we never do.

I am on my way, but suddenly
there is an accident
requiring my attention.
You are on your way, but suddenly
your help is needed elsewhere.

And when we can finally be
on our way again,
the time runs out.

Or we are in the very place
we were supposed to be,
but there are too many people there,
