プロフィール / Profile

Michelle Sutanto (Indonesian, b. 2000)

Michelle Sutanto is an emerging Indonesian artist currently based in Jakarta, Indonesia. She is currently a junior at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago focusing on painting and drawing and Art History. Being the experimental artist she is, Michelle is still in search of her specific style. However, she has developed a fascination with the method of close-up paintings and exploring the microcosm.

Portraying the familiar in an unfamiliar way, her most recent works intend to reintroduce the overlooked or the forgotten. Inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe's close-up paintings, she manipulates her composition, intending to expose some of the features that she sees, but others often do not. The zoomed-in orientation of real everyday objects appears dramatic, and what she depicts as realism turns into a form of abstraction. The meticulousness in portraying minute details of objects is proven to be impactful as it attracts the audience and develops an intimate connection with them. Her passion for exploring the microcosm drives her central concept, and her current works integrate the exploration of the microcosm into the theme of Pasar (fresh market).

She is working hard to be more active in the art industry and please look forward to more of her works coming in the near future!

Feel free to chat or video call to interact with me during the course of the event.
